The Native Lands Advocacy Project (NLAP) is pleased to announce that our Agriculture on Native Lands Dashboard is now updated with data from the 2022 Census of Agriculture for American Indian Reservations! These updates, which we examine in this blog post, add to the dashboard’s functionality for users seeking to examine land and agricultural data for Indian Country in aggregate.
The Census of Agriculture for American Indian Reservations represents the most complete source of data on agricultural producers and farms on American Indian Reservations. However, it is not published and distributed in the most accessible format for tribal stakeholders. Since 2020, NLAP has developed an interactive data dashboard that enables unprecedented access to this data by not only presenting the raw numbers but also making it possible to group some or all included reservations, see the distribution of key variables across reservations, compare change across time, and compare producer characteristics and access between Native and non-Native farmers and ranchers. To learn more about the USDA Census of Agriculture for American Indian Reservations, including its limitations, see this blog post and/or the contextual information provided below the dashboard itself.
Updates to the Dashboard Include:
Additional filtering by the National Congress of American Indian (NCAI) Regions
NLAP builds filters into our data tools to ensure that users can easily access the data they seek, and all of our data tools allow users to filter by individual Native lands. One recent addition to our filters is the National Congress of American Indian (NCAI)’s regions. This filter is added out of NLAP’s desire to support regional analyses and coalition-building. The choice to use the NCAI’s regions (rather than, for example, the BIA’s, EPA’s, or NASS’s) comes from our commitment to honoring tribal sovereignty and self-determination.
The video above highlights this new NCAI Regions filter. Rather than having to select each individual reservation within a region, users can simply select the region they’re interested in learning about. This update is particularly useful for region-wide comparisons, which can give different insights than reservation-to-reservation comparisons.
Updated Population Tab
The updated Population tab displays 3 bar charts (Native, Non-Native, & Total) AND users are able to filter between female, male, or female & male operators.
Previously, this tab only displayed 2 bar charts – for female & male operators – and users could change the “Race” to look at either Native, non-Native, or Total. This advantage of this update is that it offers users more specificity in their analyses.
At NLAP, we recognize that accurate data is significant when it comes to Native advocacy work. Our goal is to continue to update tools, such as the USDA Census of Agriculture dashboard, so that they reflect Native tribes, Native peoples, and Native interests as accurately as possible.
