Elevation Profile Explorer Overview

Welcome to the Elevation Profile Explorer, a powerful tool designed to help you understand the terrain and elevation changes across Native lands in the United States. This interactive feature allows you to explore the topography of any area in the world, with Native boundaries being highlighted , providing valuable insights that can be applied to a wide range of planning and conservation efforts.

How to Use the Elevation Profile Explorer

  • Zoom In on a Specific Native Land: Start by typing the name of a Native land in the search bar. As you type, a dropdown list will appear—select the correct name to focus on that area. To clear the highlight, click the ‘X’ in the search bar.
  • Draw Your Profile: Activate the profile drawing tool by clicking the “Draw” button at the bottom of the page. Your cursor will change to a crosshair, indicating that you can now begin drawing. Click to set the starting point of your profile, add as many points as needed, and double-click to finish. The tool will then generate an interactive elevation profile cross-section.
  • Explore and Save: Move your cursor along the profile to see corresponding locations on the map. You can save and name your cross-sections for future reference. Use the available buttons within the tool to view additional statistics, switch the route direction, export the profile, and adjust elevation and distance units.

Applications for Climate Planning and Resource Management

The Elevation Profile Explorer is not just a tool for visualizing terrain—it’s a critical resource for understanding the landscape of Native lands and making informed decisions in climate planning and resource management. Here are some ways you can use this tool:

  • Climate Planning: Understanding elevation profiles can help in assessing areas prone to flooding, erosion, or other climate-related impacts. This information is vital for developing adaptation strategies that protect both the land and the communities that depend on it.

  • Agricultural Planning: Elevation plays a crucial role in agriculture, influencing factors such as water flow, soil moisture, and microclimates. Use the Elevation Profile Explorer to plan the most suitable areas for different types of crops, optimize irrigation systems, and implement sustainable farming practices.

  • Water Conservation and Utilization: The tool allows you to explore watersheds and understand how water moves across the landscape. This is essential for managing water resources, conserving water, and ensuring that communities have reliable access to this vital resource.

  • Infrastructure Development: Whether planning new roads, buildings, or other infrastructure projects, understanding the terrain is essential. The Elevation Profile Explorer provides the topographical insights needed to make informed decisions and minimize environmental impact.

This tool is designed to empower Native communities with the knowledge needed to protect, manage, and sustain their lands in the face of changing environmental conditions. We invite you to explore the Elevation Profile Explorer and discover how it can support your efforts in climate resilience and resource stewardship.
