Paid Internship Opportunities with NLAP

The Native Lands Advocacy Project (NLAP), developer of the Native Land Information System, is seeking qualified individuals for three paid remote part-time and temporary (6 month) internship positions. The Native Lands Advocacy Project and Native Land Information System are projects of Village Earth, a publicly supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Fort Collins, Colorado. We seek individuals with an interest and passion for promoting indigenous natural resources stewardship, environmental justice, food sovereignty, native climate resiliency, and native land rights.
Compensation is $15-$18 per hour depending on knowledge and/or experience. Academic credit may also be possible depending on your program of study. Students and individuals with indigenous descent are highly encouraged to apply

Data Visualization Intern
This position will work closely with and receive guidance from the NLAP team in the development of online maps, online data dashboards, and other graphics, data visualizations for our website, blog posts, and interactive story maps. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to present data in a way that is both compelling and visually appealing.
Qualified applicants should also have demonstrated skills and/or willingness to participate in training in:
- Data cleaning and transformation,
- Online mapping and digital story mapping using ArcGIS online and/or willingness to participate in training.
- Experience using Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep and/or willingness to participate in training.
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Team collaboration and project management applications
Data Journalist Intern
This position will work closely with and receive guidance from the NLAP team to draw upon the data on https://nativeland.info to tell relevant and compelling stories that promote one of four strategic directions of the NLAP.
- Accountability – Has the potential to clearly expose current or historical corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse as it relates to native people and native lands.
- Awareness – Has the potential to clearly expose structural or environmental racism experienced by indigenous communities
- Reframe – Has the potential to dramatically reframe the public perception of indigenous people and indigenous lands away from the settler colonial gaze towards new narratives centered in the contemporary voices and lives of native people.
- Power – Bolsters indigenous claims to land or stewardship of natural resources, etc. that can strengthen their case in negotiations, court cases, resource disputes etc.
This position requires demonstrated writing skills, understanding of basic statistics and demonstrated ability to clearly explain complex issues using data and familiarity with current and historical indigenous land and resource issues.

Social Media Outreach Intern
The Social Media manager will work closely with and receive guidance from the NLAP team to grow NLAP’s social media reach by developing targeted and compelling content to be shared on NLAP’s website and various social media channels. Help create a “presence” for NLAP in the indigenous social media space. Stay current with comments and DMs.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of contemporary indigenous issues and passion for advocating for native rights and promoting indigenous causes and organizations.

- WordPress
- Hootsuite Social Media Manager
- Google Analytics
- Google Data Studio
- Graphic design skills using Adobe Creative Cloud and Canva
